label A piece of paper or leather attached to the spine or upper board indicating the title, author, publisher, etc.
laid down When something (illustration, engraving, map, etc) has been pasted onto another surface.
laid in Any form of paper loosely inserted in to the book, not glued.
laid paper Paper which when held up to the light shows a series of parallel lines caused by the weave of the dandy roll.
large paper copy An edition on a larger size paper and of a superior quality than that of the standard edition. See also de luxe edition.
  law calf Tanned uncoloured calfskin used mainly in the binding of law books.
  leather joints Inside leather hinges made with the endpapers of a heavy or cumbersome book.
  leatherette See imitation leather.
  levant A good quality morocco with a course grain.
  library binding A more durable binding intended for the lending library.
  limited edition A production of a limited number of copies, usually numbered and frequently signed.
  limp A style of binding using flexible covers without boards.
  linen finish The embossing of paper or cloth to resemble coarsely woven linen.
